As IoT technology evolves, Sendum has been able to grow into a services company, offering a complete end-to-end solution to our customers.
Sendum uses Cisco Jasper to automate device provisioning and remotely monitor customer assets during transit
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the supply chain logistics industry, enabling companies like Sendum Wireless Corporation to offer their customers tracking systems that help monitor shipments in real time. By collecting a variety of data, Sendum is able to immediately alert their customers if the temperature of their cargo fluctuates outside the normal range or the shipment has been opened or tampered with.
With thousands of units deployed across many industries and a variety of carriers, Sendum uses Cisco Jasper to streamline the device provisioning process, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in activation costs. Sendum also relies on Control Center for remote troubleshooting issues in the field to identify problems.
Sendum Wireless turns to Cisco Jasper to automate asset tracking in supply chain, logistics and law enforcement
Virtually every industry uses shipping—from produce growers to aircraft manufacturers, to healthcare and financial services companies. Businesses around the world transport valuable assets, and need the most reliable and up-to-date information to track the location of goods, the conditions they’ve been exposed to, and whether they arrived safe and undamaged at their destination.
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the supply chain and logistics industry, enabling companies such as Sendum Wireless to offer their customers tracking systems that help monitor shipments in real time, and never lose track of packages, containers or equipment.
“The Internet of Things is what has enabled Sendum to have a business,” says Wayne Chester, President of Sendum Wireless. “Sendum started off as a hardware manufacturer, but as IoT technology evolves, Sendum has been able to grow into a services company offering a complete end-to-end solution to our customers.”
Automation enables real-time corrective action to keep cargo safe in transit
Today, a variety of businesses use Sendum services, including large pharmaceutical companies that place Sendum devices inside packages containing high-priced medications to help protect against loss or theft, and flower growers who require their goods be kept at precisely controlled temperatures during transit.
By collecting a variety of data including the GPS location of the device, temperature and humidity, shock, vibration and orientation of the cargo, Sendum can immediately alert their customers if the temperature fluctuates outside the normal range or the shipment has been opened or tampered. The customer can then take immediate corrective action to save the cargo before it’s damaged or destroyed. Federal, state and local law enforcement also use Sendum devices.
Sendum was looking for ways to streamline the device provisioning process for thousands of units deployed across a variety of carriers. In 2012 Sendum began using Control Center to automate device activation and move the process from the end-customer to the factory.
“We use the Cisco Jasper platform API at the factory to activate and provision units,” explains Alan Lai, Sendum’s lead for New Product Development. “Prior to using Control Center, provisioning would take around half a day for 500 units. Today at the factory, it’s done automatically in a matter of minutes.”
Slashing costs, speeding uptime and streamlining ease of use with Control Center automation
Sendum also relies on Control Center to troubleshoot issues in the field. Prior to integrating the Cisco Jasper platform into their operations, Sendum would have to contact its carriers and get a live person to diagnose and troubleshoot issues. Today with Control Center, Sendum does this in real time with just a click of a button.
“Control Center has been absolutely instrumental in enabling Sendum to lower our costs by making activation and provisioning much quicker and simpler, as well as providing greater support for our customers,” said Chester. “Automation has enabled Sendum to save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in activation and support costs.”
Sendum has found the Cisco Jasper platform to be extremely easy to set up and manage. The team was able to configure the APIs and get started with Control Center without any direct assistance from the Cisco Jasper team.
“We expected the development time to be in the order of months, and it ended up being just weeks. It’s very easy and straightforward,” said Lai. “Everything works smoothly and intuitively.”
For several industries, such as food manufacturing, government regulations now require that producers guarantee their products are kept safe in transit, fueling the demand for real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity to ensure that cargo doesn’t spoil during shipment. As Sendum aggressively expands into new markets and geographies, they continue to partner with Cisco Jasper to help increase efficiency and save costs.
“As we grow into different markets around the world,” concludes Lai, “Control Center is helping us provision and activate units much quicker and deliver services to our customers in a much more timely manner.” Chester agrees: “Virtually every carrier we went to around the world is using the Cisco Jasper platform. That made our product rollout super easy.”
