Industrielle Alliance partners with Baseline Telematics, a leading developer of insurance telematics solutions, to help transform the way they price and sell car insurance and design programs to help improve driver safety.
Baseline relies on Control Center to transform raw telematics data into risk information that can be used to calculate premium models and reward good driving habits. The company offers its services to insurance companies as a complete turnkey solution, and credits Cisco Jasper with its ability to manage costs and quickly scale in response to customer needs.
Baseline Telematics and Industrielle Alliance use IoT to improve driver safety
The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing the car insurance industry on a scale not seen since the introduction of the car itself. For decades, premiums have been calculated using proxy-based risk assessment models and historical data.
Today, a growing number of innovative companies such as Quebec-based Industrielle Alliance are moving to usage-based insurance (UBI) models, driven by the advancement of telematics technologies and smart tracking devices. Industrielle Alliance partners with Baseline Telematics, a leading developer of insurance telematics solutions, to help transform the way they price and sell car insurance and design innovative programs to help improve driver safety.
One such program is Mobiliz, which is aimed at young drivers, from 16 to 24 years old. “This program is designed to improve the driving behavior of young people, and we hope it will help reduce the number of accidents and ultimately save lives,” says Michel Laurin, the President and COO of Industrielle Alliance Auto and Home Insurance. “We launched Mobiliz in April of 2012 and have seen an uptick in demand of new customers in the 16 to 24 segment.”
A connected device inside the car collects information about driver behavior and driving patterns, which can be viewed in real time via a private portal or through weekly email updates. “The parent reaction was awesome,” adds Laurin, “they are glad we can come up with a device that can help their kids drive better.”
The younger audience is also very receptive of the program, because it rewards good driving behavior and helps teens and young adults save on auto insurance rates, which can be rather expensive.
The impact of the program exceeded all expectations. Three-quarters of all participating drivers changed their behavior and were able to see the reduction of their monthly insurance premiums. It has also enabled Industrielle Alliance to become a thought leader in how they approached insurance and driver safety.
“The Mobiliz program has enabled us to become more of a service company, approaching clients with services, instead of just price,” concludes Laurin.
Using Control Center to translate raw data into risk assessments and premium models
Baseline has been instrumental in the success of Mobiliz program. The company focuses on transforming raw telematics data into risk information that can be used to calculate premium models for the insurance industry.

Mobiliz was the first program that Baseline launched on the Cisco Jasper IoT platform. Control Center quickly became as essential piece of Baseline offerings, allowing the company to streamline the connection between its products, customers and mobile operators.
“Without Cisco Jasper, mobile carriers wouldn’t have the agility to provide us with the connections, plans and interfaces that we would need to deliver services to our customers,” concludes Savoie.
Enabling Baseline to scale its business

As part of the UBI service, Baseline’s devices collect a variety of data, including GPS positions, vehicle usage information and driving patterns. With the help of Control Center’s automation rules and APIs, Baseline turns this data into meaningful and actionable metrics for insurance companies.
“Cisco Jasper allows us to offer our own turnkey solution as a service for our customers,” adds Labonte, “if we didn’t have Control Center, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”
Control Center has also been instrumental in optimizing the management of devices on different rate plans. Labonte explains: “Control Center helps us to better control our costs because we can see when we need to transition the devices from one plan to another and manage overages. It is key to effective cost management and optimizing our revenue.”
Baseline has leveraged their experience with Cisco Jasper in North America to expand operations to new markets, specifically Europe and Asia Pacific, where Cisco Jasper has close relationships with local carriers. “It made it less of a hassle for us to reach those markets,” concludes Labonte.
