Cisco Jasper has given us the ability to build a full-service infrastructure for our customers, so they can oversee their investments and ensure safety and security for their workers.
Cisco Jasper gives Osprey a reliable and cost-effective way to deploy and scale operations
Osprey Informatics provides oil and gas companies with an innovative IoT-based intelligent visual monitoring platform that goes far beyond video surveillance. Osprey’s customers rely on powerful analytics, alerts and reporting to get accurate information about field operations delivered in real time to any device.
Cisco Jasper Control Center enables Osprey to gain insight over the activities of all their remote connected devices. Control Center also helps streamline the process of testing the systems before they go live—enabling the company to detect any problems in advance and ensuring the platform can scale across hundreds of thousands of remote locations while keeping tight control over costs.

Oil and gas companies operate an extensive network of facilities—from wellheads and processing plants, to pipelines—often stretching for thousands of miles across remote areas and challenging terrain. Keeping equipment and machinery in top working order while ensuring the safety and security of assets and personnel is the energy industry’s highest priority.
Osprey Informatics provides these companies with an innovative cloud-based intelligent visual monitoring platform that goes far beyond ordinary video surveillance. Oil and gas companies rely on the Osprey Reach platform and its powerful analytics, alerts and reporting to get accurate information about field operations, delivered in real time to any device.
Osprey needed a reliable and robust infrastructure to remotely manage highly mission-critical systems for its customers. Cisco Jasper Control Center gives Osprey the insight over the activities of all its remote connected devices. Cisco Jasper also streamlines the process of testing systems before they go live, enabling the company to detect any possible problems in advance, without unforeseen budget creeps.
Ensuring remote surveillance of mission-critical operations
Michael von Hauff, CEO of Osprey Informatics, credits Cisco Jasper with helping the company transform the way their customers think about monitoring their remote facilities.
“Control Center has given us the ability to build a full-service infrastructure for our customers, so they can oversee their investments and ensure safety and security for their workers,” says von Hauff.
Osprey Reach provides weatherproof, rugged surveillance cameras, a dedicated modem and a robust back-end software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform. Using an on-demand deployment model, Osprey distributes its platform, complete with wireless connectivity, directly to the professionals responsible for managing remote facilities and assets, simplifying the IT integration process and reducing deployment times.
Delivering a complete solution to a customer also means that Osprey assumes full responsibility for any data costs its modems incur. Naturally, a robust connected device infrastructure is a critical component of Osprey’s success.
“Using developer kits from Rogers and Cisco Jasper, we built and tested our wireless components even before we developed the rest of our platform,” notes von Hauff. “We knew Control Center was the solution we needed to ensure our platform could scale across hundreds of thousands of remote locations while keeping tight control over our costs.”
Using automation rules to speed deployment and control costs
Recalling an incident from a time before Osprey used Control Center, von Hauff mentions a "runaway” modem that in one month sustained thousands of dollars in data charges. “We didn’t see the charge until we got the wireless bill a month later,” explains von Hauff. “It blew our profit margin for that customer site for the entire year.”
Today, Osprey uses Control Center automation rules to deactivate a modem immediately or move it to a different rating pool if it begins to display unusual behavior.
“With the Cisco Jasper platform, we get automated device management, better inventory control and faster deployment opportunities,” says von Hauff. “For us, it’s the only reliable and cost-effective way to deploy and scale our operations.”
