Peterborough Utilities partners with Cisco Jasper to gain insight and control over mission-critical applications
The demand for energy efficiency and more environmentally conscious use of resources is transforming the way utility companies operate. Upgrading existing infrastructures to meet these demands requires new technologies that can provide visibility and control over multiple points in the distribution systems. Exemplifying this trend, Peterborough Utilities takes advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) to transform the way it monitors and manages water treatment, electricity distribution and utility usage.
In Ontario, Canada, Peterborough Utilities Group is an integrated utility providing electricity and water distribution, and is one of the leading metering service providers serving residential customers, businesses and electricity retailers. The company began working with Cisco Jasper to connect devices across multiple points in its distribution network—including smart switches, relays and revenue metering installations.
Peterborough’s team developed SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and revenue metering applications for these devices, to monitor activities at various points along the line and manage any issues that arise.
Gaining insight and control over mission-critical applications
Peterborough takes advantage of IoT to collect data–temperature, electrical current, set points and board status–every few minutes from its switches and metering points across Ontario. The Control Center platform makes it easy to control devices remotely from a central location.
Greg Murch, a Metering Technician for Peterborough and the Project Lead responsible for the development and rollout of SCADA communication applications, relies on the Cisco Jasper platform to make sure the company’s smart switches and metering units are operating properly and cost-effectively.
“We have so much more insight and control over our units now than we did before,” says Murch. “Control Center has paid for itself, tenfold. We can see if a device is connecting or not, and we can manage issues ourselves at any time, day or night. We’re in control of our systems and how we deliver our services.”
Accommodating different requirements with flexible rating
Depending on which types of devices the company needs to connect, Peterborough can now take advantage of flexible rate plans that it can assign when a new modem is installed.
“Data from devices can range from as little as 500KB to as much as 15GB,” Murch explains. “Having flexibility in rates helps us stay lean and efficient. We have been able to save countless dollars by managing individual rate plans on the fly, avoiding large monthly overage charges.”
Peterborough has been deploying SCADA applications across its network of smart switches and revenue metering, and plans to have 125 units connected by 2016. Peterborough is also investigating many other applications for this wireless technology, including smart meters and even mobile devices for field staff.
As a future-friendly business, Peterborough aims to partner with Cisco Jasper and use IoT to augment its infrastructure and address the need to distribute electricity in a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly way.
